Global Travelar (AR-guided application)

The tour guide system is broken and leaves historical and cultural travel experiences lacking. Tour guides struggle to satisfy unique interests, provide flexibility and leverage new technology. Travellers are unable to gain advanced knowledge about the sites leaving them with little understanding of historical context. This lack of interactive and contextual information diminishes the educational and emotional impacts of cultural experiences.

To bridge this gap, a solution is needed to deliver immersive content to users with AR headsets. Global Travelar is an Augmented Reality AR-guided tour application designed to provide travellers with enhanced cultural and historical experiences by overlaying the past onto the present at real-world locations. Each tour has customisable itineraries that deliver interactive storytelling, virtual artefacts, and immersive historical reconstructions using Augmented Reality; to transform the way people discover and engage with historical landmarks, cultural sites, and natural wonders.

The tools utilised for AR development included the Unity Engine, Vuforia Engine, and C++ with Microsoft Visual Studio. Microsoft HoloLens 2 served as the AR hardware. Unity was the primary development platform, with Vuforia SDK integrated for image recognition functionality. For mobile application development, the tools used were Visual Studio Code IDE, Xcode for the iOS simulator, Android Studio for the Android emulator, and Expo for the development build system. React Native was employed as the frontend framework, while the Firebase Database REST API was used for backend support. The programming language used was JavaScript, and CSS was used for styling.
