Clinicians need to analyse data to improve our healthcare system. Traditional 2D visualisation techniques are limited, so our team was asked to create an epidemiological data visualisation tool that can help identify trends and patterns across different demographics within South Western Sydney to ensure better clinical judgement and predictions.
The web-based application was developed using React for the frontend, Mapbox to provide a base map, and Deck.gl for the interactive and immersive graphs. These visualisations ranged from bar graphs to heatmaps, which were used to display data such as triaging within South Western Sydney emergency departments, and the distribution of Aboriginal people within Sydney. Together, these technologies enabled the development of an intuitive interface for visualising large health datasets.
Although the project was limited by the lack of available data, clients from Liverpool Hospital and Ingham Institute were satisfied with the outcome of this project. Additional improvements could be made to provide future data predictions and expand to include more local health districts within Sydney and Australia.
This application successfully helps clinicians identify trends and patterns to make informed decisions for patients. It will improve the healthcare received by patients within the South Western Sydney Local Health District and further.
