Planet Patch

A lack of awareness about the implications of climate change on food security and agriculture is hindering efforts to mitigate its impact. Planet patch is a sandbox game that challenges players to confront these challenges firsthand to gain an understanding of the complex issues surrounding food security and agriculture.

The development of this project uses an agile approach with emphasis on the stages of designing and implementing. After defining the issue and outlining a solution that would achieve all objectives through investigating agricultural practices and the impacts of climate change through multiple secondary sources, the designing stage began. This stage was closely intertwined with testing as scripts were tested periodically on young adults (aged 14-17). Scratch and pixelart.com were the main development platforms used for game development and art. The feedback from testing was used to improve the interface with a focus on accessibility for all ages.

Through this project it was found that although many people had a basic understanding of climate change they did not initially know its complexities. The limitations included time constraints and abilities of the developer and the developing platforms. It was successful in raising awareness although it could be improved by making gameplay more detailed and aligned with reality.
Planet patch can be a valuable tool in educating communities about the effect of climate change on their lives as well as inspiring and empowering them to be more present in climate discussions and research. It will allow for a deeper understanding of these issues.
